The stateless agent problem

Every AI agent platform today has the same fundamental limitation: stateless execution. Each conversation starts from zero. Each workflow run has no memory of previous runs. Each agent knows nothing about the department it serves.

Context windows are a band-aid, not a solution. They give an agent a few thousand tokens of recent history, then that history evaporates. Your support agent that brilliantly resolved a complex issue yesterday? Today it has no idea the customer even exists.

This isn’t a minor inconvenience. It’s a structural failure that prevents AI agents from being genuinely useful over time.

What “memory” means for AI agents

When we say an AI agent should “remember,” we don’t mean dumping chat logs into a database. We mean structured, hierarchical knowledge that mirrors how human organizations actually store and retrieve information.

Think about what an experienced employee knows:

  • About specific entities: Customer X prefers email over phone. Vendor Y always sends invoices in non-standard formats. Project Z was deprioritized in Q2.
  • About workflows: The monthly report takes 3 days, not 2. Step 4 always needs manual review. The API rate limit requires a 30-second delay.
  • About the department: Brand voice is professional but warm. Discounts above 15% need VP approval. The escalation path goes through Sarah, then James.

An AI agent needs all three levels — and more.

The 5-layer memory hierarchy

JieGou implements persistent memory as a 5-layer hierarchy. Each layer serves a different purpose and mirrors a different type of organizational knowledge:

Layer 1: Entity Memory

Persistent facts about customers, products, and projects. When a customer mentions their Q3 budget constraints in January, that fact is stored. In March, a different agent in a different workflow can automatically adjust its proposal based on that context.

Entity Memory uses LLM compaction: as entities accumulate interactions, older memories are automatically summarized into concise, high-signal context. Memory stays relevant without unbounded growth.

Layer 2: Workflow Memory

Per-workflow accumulated knowledge from execution history. Your invoice processing workflow has run 500 times. It now knows that supplier X always sends PDFs with non-standard headers and auto-adjusts. It knows that the approval step takes 2 hours on average and pre-notifies the approver.

Workflow Memory isn’t just “state checkpointing” (saving where you left off). It’s learning from history — extracting patterns and knowledge from past executions.

Layer 3: Department Memory

This is entirely unique to JieGou. Department Memory is the CLAUDE.md equivalent for enterprise departments.

Just like Claude Code’s CLAUDE.md file gives an AI agent project-level context, Department Memory gives every department agent institutional context. It auto-populates from installed recipes, templates, and active workflows. A new marketing agent is created. It instantly knows the brand voice, campaign history, and audience segments — without any manual configuration.

Layer 4: Agent Memory

Each individual agent retains context across conversations and tasks. A support agent remembers a customer from a conversation 3 months ago and picks up where they left off. Agent Memory survives session boundaries and conversation windows.

Layer 5: Cross-Workflow Memory

Insights from one workflow automatically inform others through shared entity memory. Sales discovers a customer is evaluating a competitor. Support, marketing, and account management workflows all gain that context automatically — because they share entity memory at the department level.

LangGraph has state checkpointing — saving where a workflow left off so it can resume. CrewAI has shared memory for crew members within a single execution. n8n has buffer nodes that hold recent messages. These are useful features, but they’re point solutions, not a memory hierarchy.

LLM compaction: memory that grows, not overflows

A naive approach to persistent memory would store every interaction forever. That doesn’t scale. After 10,000 customer interactions, the raw memory would be too large to fit in any context window.

JieGou solves this with LLM compaction. When an entity’s memory entries exceed a threshold (default: 20), the system invokes an LLM to summarize older entries into a compact, high-signal summary. The result: unbounded interaction history, bounded storage.

This means your agents can remember a customer from their very first interaction, even after thousands of subsequent interactions across multiple agents and workflows.
