The Commerce Department and FTC set March 11, 2026 as a decision point for AI regulation in the United States. The possible outcomes range from a unified federal framework that preempts state laws, to a continuation of the current patchwork where 38 states have enacted their own AI legislation, to some hybrid where federal standards cover certain sectors while states retain authority over others.
