Why WhatsApp Matters for Business
WhatsApp has over 2 billion active users worldwide, making it the dominant messaging platform in Southeast Asia, India, Latin America, the Middle East, and large parts of Europe. For businesses operating in these markets, WhatsApp is not optional — it is the primary way customers expect to communicate.
Unlike email, WhatsApp messages are read within minutes. Unlike phone calls, they are asynchronous and leave a clear record. The WhatsApp Business API takes this a step further by enabling structured, automated conversations at scale — template messages, delivery tracking, rich media, and programmatic replies.
JieGou’s WhatsApp Business API integration connects your business phone number to AI-powered workflows, so every customer message is triaged, routed, and responded to with the same governance controls you apply to every other channel.
Setting Up the Integration
JieGou connects to WhatsApp via the Meta Cloud API, sharing the same authentication layer used by Facebook Messenger and Instagram DM integrations. If you have already connected a Meta Business account for Messenger or Instagram, you can add WhatsApp without re-authenticating.
The setup requires three pieces of information:
- Meta Business Account — Your verified business account on the Meta platform
- WhatsApp Business Phone Number ID — The phone number registered with WhatsApp Business API, in E.164 format (e.g.,
+14155551234) - Business Account ID — Used for routing and multi-number configurations
JieGou configures the webhook automatically. Once connected, incoming messages — text, images, documents, audio, video, location pins, contacts, button replies, and list replies — flow into your AI pipeline as normalized events.
Template Messages with Structured Components
WhatsApp requires pre-approved message templates for outbound business-initiated conversations. JieGou supports the full template specification with four component types:
- Header — Text, image, video, or document displayed at the top of the message
- Body — The main message text with variable placeholders (
{{1}},{{2}}, etc.) - Footer — Small secondary text below the body
- Buttons — Call-to-action buttons (phone call, URL) or quick reply buttons
This structure lets you send rich, interactive messages that comply with Meta’s template policies. Your AI workflows can dynamically populate template variables based on customer data, order status, or conversation context.
The 10 MCP Tools
JieGou provides 10 MCP tools for WhatsApp, giving your AI workflows full control over conversations:
| Tool | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Send Text | Send a plain text message to a customer |
| Send Image | Send an image with optional caption |
| Send Document | Send a PDF, spreadsheet, or other file |
| Send Audio | Send a voice message or audio file |
| Send Video | Send a video with optional caption |
| Send Location | Send a location pin with address details |
| Send Contact | Share a contact card (name, phone, email) |
| Send Template | Send a pre-approved template message with dynamic variables |
| Mark Read | Mark a message as read (triggers blue checkmarks) |
| Get Profile | Retrieve the customer’s WhatsApp profile information |
These tools can be composed in recipes and workflows. For example, a customer sends a photo of a damaged product. Your workflow receives the image event, runs it through an AI vision model to assess damage severity, queries your order system, and sends a template message with return instructions — all without human intervention.
Delivery Receipt Tracking
WhatsApp provides granular delivery status updates that JieGou tracks automatically:
- Sent — The message left JieGou’s infrastructure and reached WhatsApp servers
- Delivered — The message arrived on the customer’s device
- Read — The customer opened and viewed the message
These status events flow into your workflow as template status webhooks. You can build escalation logic around them: if a critical message is not delivered within 30 minutes, trigger an SMS fallback. If a message is delivered but not read within 2 hours, send a follow-up nudge.
The Mark Read tool works in reverse — when your AI processes an incoming message, it marks it as read so the customer sees blue checkmarks and knows their message has been received.
Pre-Built Recipes for Instant Automation
JieGou ships three WhatsApp-specific recipes that cover the most common support patterns:
WhatsApp Message Triage — Every incoming message is classified by intent, urgency, and sentiment. Product questions go to the knowledge base pipeline. Complaints are flagged for priority handling. Spam is filtered silently.
WhatsApp Auto-Response — When the triage recipe identifies a message that matches your FAQ knowledge base with high confidence, this recipe generates and sends a contextual reply. Confidence thresholds and approval gates ensure quality.
WhatsApp Escalation Router — Messages that require human attention — complex complaints, legal matters, VIP customers — are routed to the right team with full conversation context attached.
